About the organisation
The City of Winchester Trust is Winchester's Civic Society. Its objective is to seek to conserve the character of the City and its surrounding area by:
Preserving and protecting its buildings, spaces and artefacts
Sponsoring and encouraging new building, redevelopment, landscaping and conservation in accordance with the highest architectural standards
Promoting awareness of the above
The Trust is dedicated to ensuring that Winchester is a vibrant and desirable place to live.work.study and visit. We work to protect Winchester's rich heritage and its essential character by pursuing a vision for the future, so that Winchester remains a great city today and for future generations.
The Trust is a charitable company limited by guarantee with net assets of around £800k and an annual turnover of around £35k. It currently has 10 trustees and approximately 500 annual or life members.
About the role
The role of the Honorary Treasurer is to ensure that the Trust maintains proper financial records and has effective financial controls in place. The Treasurer is also responsible for the preparation of the Trust's annual accounts in accordance with the Charities SORP for examination by an independent examiner and approval by the Trust. The Treasurer's role is also to ensure that financial policies are regularly reviewed by the Finance and Resources Committee, to supervise, together with another trustee, the Trust's investments and to oversee the role of the Secretary in carrying out day to day financial administration. Meetings of the Trustee board take place in the evening in alternate months and the Finance and Resources Committee, which is currently chaired by the Honorary Treasurer, normally meets 3 or 4 times per year.
Our ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will require the financial management experience and accounting skills to meet the core responsibilities of the role. The ability to communicate financial information clearly both orally and in writing to trustees and members is essential. The candidate will need to have the capacity to deal with the peaks and troughs of the workload associated with the role. Good team working and interpersonal skills are essential to developing effective relationships with other trustees and the Secretary. The Honorary Treasurer needs to be supportive of the objectives of the Trust. The ability and enthusiasm to contribute as a trustee to the wider objectives of the Trust going beyond the essential role of the Treasurer is highly desirable.
What’s in it for you
There is a real opportunity to make a difference. Strong financial management is as essential to the success of the Trust as to any charity. Financial management skills are in short supply and by providing them as a volunteer you are performing a vital role in enabling the Trust to operate effectively and to serve the people of Winchester. You will have the opportunity to learn more about Winchester's heritage and about how to promote and protect that heritage. You will have the chance to be involved in the activities that the Trust provides for its members such as guided city walks and tours of other heritage attractions beyond Winchester.
