About the role

Treasurer Trustee role specification

Strategic Financial Oversight

  • Collaborate with leadership: Work with the directors, including close support and collaboration with our Finance Director, to develop and review financial strategies that align with Ella’s mission.

  • Finance Audit and Risk Committee: Lead the running of the Finance Audit and Risk Committee, ensuring robust oversight of audit processes, risk management frameworks, and compliance. This includes working closely with the Finance Director to integrate their expertise into the committee’s operations and to drive continuous financial improvement.

  • Budget and risk management: Ensure that financial planning and budgeting processes support our strategic goals while identifying and mitigating financial risks—including appropriate insurance for trustees’ liability.

  • Regular review: Monitor financial performance and ensure that the risk register reflects financial risks accurately.

Effective Financial Policy and Practice

  • Policy reviews: Oversee the annual review of financial policies and procedures to ensure they meet current legislation and best practice standards.

  • Audit and data Integrity: Initiate internal or external audits to maintain the accuracy of financial data, and review financial case studies to continuously improve our practices.

  • Point of contact: Serve as a primary contact for addressing any concerns related to financial management or irregularities.

Ensuring Financial Integrity and Transparency

  • Champion best practices: Advocate for high standards in financial management across all aspects of Ella’s operations.

  • Professional development: Attend relevant financial training events and stay updated on best practices.

  • Collaborative reporting: Support fellow trustees in understanding and questioning financial reports, ensuring transparency and accountability.

  • Engagement: Work closely with the Chair, Directors, and specifically the Finance Director—to address any serious financial concerns that may arise.

Our ideal candidate

  • Strongly sympathetic with Ella’s’ values, mission, vision and purpose, and the challenges facing the women we work with.
  • Supportive of Ella’s’ team and willing to promote a strong culture of trust and collaboration at all levels of the organisation.
  • Able to maintain good, independent judgement and willing to make unpopular recommendations to the rest of the Board.
  • Strategically aware and with a good sense of organisational complexity and the challenges of change.
  • Understand modern technology and be confident in its use.
  • Motivated to work collaboratively with other trustees.
  • Accepting of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship. Some understanding of the role of trustee is desirable but not essential.
  • Willing to devote the necessary time and effort and be available to the Ella’s team for advice and enquiries on an ad hoc basis.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding law and best practice

Previous board experience is not required. We will provide support and training to help you transfer your knowledge, skills and experience to the role.
