The University for the Creative Arts Students’ Union (UCASU) is a member-led, independent charity representing the voice of over 5,000 students across campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, and Maidstone TV Studios.
Our mission is to enhance the student experience by providing support, opportunities, and a platform for students to shape their university journey.
UCASU is deeply rooted in creativity and diversity, reflecting the unique membership it serves. From running events and services to representing student interests at every level, we are committed to making a meaningful impact on student life.
As we evolve, we are embarking on an exciting new strategy to better align our activities with the needs of our members. This transformation, supported by research from Alterline, will shape the future of UCASU.
Trustees will play a crucial role in guiding this process, ensuring our strategic direction reflects our values and delivers long-term benefits to our members.
About the role
Role Specification
We are seeking three passionate and committed External Trustees to join the UCASU Board. External Trustees serve an initial two-year term, with the option to extend for a further two years. In addition to attending Board meetings, Trustees will contribute their expertise to support the ongoing development of the Union as a charity. The time commitment for this voluntary role averages 2-4 hours per month including attendance at:
Five Board meetings per year
A full-day annual strategy meeting
Subcommittees or working groups, as assigned
We make every effort to schedule meetings around Trustee availability. Trustees also engage with Union staff between meetings to offer guidance, share insights, and support effective decision-making. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates with expertise in:
Legal
Human Resources (HR)
Finance
Development, such as fundraising or corporate sponsorship
Safeguarding
Commercial Enterprise
External Trustees must meet the eligibility requirements to register with the Charity Commission. Confirmation of eligibility will be requested before the interview stage.

• Leadership and Governance: Experience in providing governance-level input and oversight, ensuring compliance with legal obligations and the Union’s constitution, and fostering a culture of good governance.
• Accountability and Transparency: A commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring decisions are communicated clearly and decisions are made with openness and clarity.
• Commitment to Legal Compliance: Understanding or willingness to learn about legal frameworks, such as safeguarding, charity law, and HR regulations, ensuring the organisation remains compliant at all times.
• Collaboration and Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to fostering a collaborative, unified Board culture, with the ability to work well with other Trustees, staff, and stakeholders.
